Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Round of 16 with Win over West Virginia State

Erika Schnaas had a 7-5, 6-1 victory at number five to clinch the win for the Crimson Hawks as they advance to the NCAA round of 16.

INDIANA, PA – In a match that lasted two days and moved indoors due to continuous rain in the area, the IUP women's tennis team advanced to the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships round of 16 with a 5-0 win over West Virginia State on Monday.

Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) had the match-clinching 7-5, 6-1 victory over Charlotte Sandy at number five singles.

The Crimson Hawks (19-7 overall) will advance to play Southwest Baptist in the round of 16 in Surprise, Arizona.

The match began on Sunday at IUP's Maple Street Courts with the Crimson Hawks taking all three doubles matchups. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) took down Sandy and Cora Berna 8-0 at number two before Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) defeated Diana Cotoros and Jordan Kerns 8-4 at number three. Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Schnaas then beat Brittany Franco and Andreea Slusarciuc 8-4 at number one.

The rains came after doubles action and forced a delay before the match was eventually postponed and moved inside on Monday to the Alpha Tennis Club in Harmar.

Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) started things of on the second day with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Kerns at number six before the clincher by Schnaas.

The Crimson Hawks match against Southwest Baptist will be on Wednesday, May 8 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
