Women’s Tennis Falls to Southwest Baptist at NCAA Championships

SURPRISE, AZ – After yet another successful season for the Crimson Hawks, their season ends with a 5-1 loss to Southwest Baptist at the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships.

The loss ends the season for IUP, which finishes with a 19-8 record and its third consecutive trip to the NCAA championships round of 16. The Crimson Hawks fell to Abilene Christian in last year's NCAA championships and Armstrong Atlantic in 2011.

The Crimson Hawks took an early lead in doubles play when Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) defeated Andjela Panovski and Mehak Singh 8-1 at number three.

Southwest Baptist followed with an 8-5 win at number one, with Fanni Varga and Christina Zentai defeating Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ). The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead into singles play with an 8-4 win at number two as Adrienn Kovacs and Faiga Schmidt beat Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) and Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston).

Varga got the first win for the Bearcats in singles play, defeating Eaton 6-0, 6-0 at number one. Singh followed that up with a victory at number two, a 6-0, 6-2 win over Timko before the clinching win at number three with Zentai taking down McCormick 6-3, 6-2.

Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) held a 6-3, 4-1 lead over Panvoski at number six when the match was clinched. Osborne took her first set over Kovacs 6-2 and was down 2-1 in the second set at number four. Schnaas trailed Schmidt in her match 6-1, 3-2.

With the win, Southwest Baptist advances to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Hawaii Pacific and NYIT on Thursday.
