PSAC Release

LOCK HAVEN, PA – The IUP men's swimming team and the women's tennis team have been honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) as winners of the conference's team GPA award for 2012-13 as it was announced on Thursday afternoon.

The awards, now in their second year of existence, were released at the conclusion of the academic year and honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the PSAC. The league hosts 23 championships, however, for the award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.

Men's swimming has claimed the award in each of the first two years, earning a 3.071 GPA this past year. The team had 33.33 percent of its members earn PSAC scholar-athlete status earlier this week, including three who posted perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs for the year.

Women's tennis also claims its second straight team award, earning an overall cumulative GPA of 3.560. It was the third highest among all 21 team awards in the PSAC, trailing Gannon's women's cross country team (3.719) and Clarion's women's volleyball team (3.583).

IUP is one of seven schools represented on the list, which also includes Gannon, Mercyhurst, Slippery Rock, California, Edinboro, and Clarion. Mercyhurst led all PSAC schools with seven teams earning top GPA awards.

Following last year's inaugural season, 12 league institutions recorded an increase in cumulative GPAs, and of the 260 teams in the PSAC, 154 (60 percent) increased their team GPAs. Of the winning totals, 11 teams registered a GPA of at least 3.4, two better than a year ago. Overall, the average GPA for the entire PSAC increased by .02 – 3.04 to 3.06.
