INDIANA, PA -
Brittney Kuhns (Middleburg, Pa. /Midd-West) scored her fourth goal of the season in a losing effort against California. The Crimson Hawks fought hard in a tightly contested battle, but the Vulcans were able to pull away in the final minutes and come away with a 2-1 victory.
Each team played tight defense and produced a lot of shots on offense, but it only took one shot to make the difference in the end of the game. The only scoring in the first half came off a Cal corner kick. Erin Hogan inbounded the ball from the corner of the field, arcing it towards the goal, and Haley Henderson found the back of the net with a header.
IUP came out strong in the second half, tying the score at 1-1 with an open field shot by
Brittney Kuhns (Middleburg, Pa. /Midd-West). Kuhns broke ahead of the defenders on a pass from
Haily Emrick (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) and shot the ball past goalkeeper Ashley Magruda to tie the game in just the fifth minute of the second half.
Possessions went back and forth between the two teams with neither being able to find the back of the net for quite some time. It was not until the 83rd minute that Cal's Henderson was able to score her second goal of the game, putting the Vulcans up 2-1 and effectively ending the game. The goal came off an assist from Lauren Pezzica.
The Crimson Hawks will take their 2-1 record to Slippery Rock on Saturday, September 14. The game will take place at 2 p.m., and will be the fourth division game of the season for IUP.
