Crimson Hawks Open Up Findlay Fall Classic, Fall to Hillsdale

FINDLAY, OH – The IUP women's volleyball team opened up play at the Findlay Fall Classic Friday, falling to Hillsdale College in straight sets.

Things got off to a rough start for the Crimson Hawks, as they dropped the first set 25-8. Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) and Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) each had two kills and Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny) added one.

IUP pressured Hillsdale in the second set, as the Chargers edged out the Crimson Hawks 25-22. Hillsdale opened up the set on a 2-0 run and the Crimson Hawks answered, earning three straight points. The teams would go back and forth, but IUP never managed to gain a lead. Sova and Kaitlyn Palmer (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) both had three kills in the set for the Crimson Hawks. Lindsay Moller helped out with six assists and one kill.

In the third set, the Crimson Hawks came up just short, falling 25-18. IUP held a lead at various points during the match, with their biggest margin coming after a Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) service ace, giving the Crimson Hawks the 7-5 lead. The Chargers, however, would take control of the set and would eventually finish IUP off and claim the victory. Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot) led the team with two kills, while Aubree Frye (Indiana/Indiana), Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name), Palmer and Sova each added one in the set.

For the match, Sova led the Crimson Hawks with six kills, followed by Palmer with four and Kissell and Miara with two apiece. Errors were a big factor in the Crimson Hawks loss, as the team finished with 21 total errors.

IUP will look to rebound tomorrow as they play Malone at 9 a.m. and Findlay at 11 a.m.
