Sova’s Career Day Leads Women’s Volleyball to Back-to-Back Wins

ERIE, PA – Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) posted 43 kills to help the IUP women's volleyball team win its first two matches of the season against Notre Dame College and West Virginia Wesleyan Friday.

The wins came at Gannon University, as the Crimson Hawks compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)/Mountain East crossover this weekend.

IUP defeated each school in four sets, gaining the win over Notre Dame in the afternoon before taking down Wesleyan at night.

Against Notre Dame, Sova registered a career-high 25 kills with a .543 hitting percentage, adding four service aces and four block assists. She had just six errors in 35 total attacks.

The Crimson Hawks played a back-and-forth first set with Notre Dame, eventually coming out with a 26-24 win. The Falcons came back with a 25-21 win in the second set before IUP scored easier wins of 25-14 and 25-19 for the match victory.

Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name) posted a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs while Lily McWilliams (Rockville, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) added 10 kills. Carissa Miara (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny) and Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) had 28 and 25 assists, respectively, to help guide the offensive attack.

Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) had 11 digs defensively, while Stephanie Kruzynski (Oxford/Oxford) had five total blocks with Williams adding three.

The Crimson Hawks raced out to another lead against Wesleyan with an opening set 25-22 victory. They rallied from a 13-6 deficit in the second set, but were edged 26-24 as Wesleyan evened the match. They came back with wins of 25-21 and 25-22 to secure the win and move to 2-7 on the year.

Sova added 18 kills in the nightcap, with only two errors on 27 total attacks. Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) had 12 kills while Lentz had another double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs.

Miara had a season-high 36 assists and 10 digs on the night while Barnes added 18 digs and three aces.

The Crimson Hawks wrap up the PSAC/Mountain East crossover on Saturday when they play West Virginia State in Erie. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m.
