Women’s Volleyball Drops Pair on First Day of Ferris State Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The IUP women's volleyball team dropped a pair of their season-opening matches, falling to Ashland and Cedarville on the opening day of the Ferris State Invitational.

The Crimson Hawks lost to Ashland in three sets in the morning and to Cedarville in four sets later that afternoon.

Freshmen Kaitlyn Palmer (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) showed flashes against Cedarville, notching 10 kills and 21 assists, respectively. IUP defeated the Yellow Jackets 25-19 in the first set, rallying from a 10-8 deficit. Cedarville then took set two 25-22, set three 25-21 and set four 25-19.

Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) and Aubree Frye (Indiana/Indiana) each added eight kills apiece. Defensively, Joie Hrapla (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Bishop Canevin) and Frye had 13 digs while Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) had 12. Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) had six total blocks while Moeller added four. Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot), Palmer and Kissell each had three.

Ashland proved to be too strong from the get-go with wins of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-17. Kissell had five kills and four digs while Moeller had nine assists and eight digs.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action tomorrow with matches against Missouri-St. Louis at noon and Saginaw Valley State at 5 p.m.
