Crimson Hawks End Skid, Cruise past Slippery Rock on Rivalry Night

INDIANA, PA – Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) scored a career-high 22 points to help IUP end its five-game losing streak with a 66-50 win over rival Slippery Rock on Saturday night at the Kovalchick Complex.

Stapleton tied a season-high with five three-pointers, including four in the opening half, to lead three Crimson Hawks with double-figure points. She finished 7-of-15 from the field with three rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes.

Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) scored 11 points and dished out five assists while Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) added 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

IUP improves to 12-6 overall and 3-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. Slippery Rock falls to 4-14 and 1-7.

The Crimson Hawks came out firing, taking a 12-5 lead on a three by Stapleton just under five minutes after the opening tip. A three-pointer by Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) just a few minutes later put IUP up by 13 before Stapleton's third three of the half gave the Crimson Hawks a 30-14 lead with 6:30 before the break.

IUP continued to pour it on, ending the half on an 8-2 run, including a layup from Stoner as the buzzer sounded to take a 38-17 lead into the locker room.

The Crimson Hawks' shooting fell off in the second half as Slippery Rock tried to mount a comeback. But thanks to a total of 16 forced turnovers, IUP was able to keep its sizeable lead en route to the 16-point victory.

Wareham finished with seven points off the bench, going 4-of-6 from the foul line in 16 minutes. Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) grabbed a team-high eight boards to go along with five points and three assists and Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) contributed five points, five rebounds and three assists.

The Crimson Hawks end the first half of divisional play with a 3-5 mark, tied for sixth in the PSAC West.

They return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown to face the Bobcats. The Crimson Hawks defeated UPJ 96-72 in their first meeting back on Nov. 20.
