MANSFIELD, PA – Four players scored in double-figures to help the IUP women's basketball team to a 78-63 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win over Mansfield on Friday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.
Leading the way for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 10-1 on the season, was
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep), as she scored a game-high 23 points.
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds while
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) and
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) added 10 points apiece.
The game with the still winless Mountaineers (0-12) was close in the onset, with Mansfield claiming a 6-5 lead just 1:35 into the contest. The Crimson Hawks responded with a 14-4 run, aided by seven points from Stoner, to take a 19-9 lead with 13:05 to play.
Mansfield chipped away at the lead and after 11 consecutive points during a 4:06 span, took a 20-19 lead with under nine minutes to play in the half.
That lead lasted all but 1:34, as Stamp nailed a three-pointer – one of her five during the afternoon – to start an 11-2 run and give the Crimson Hawks a 31-22 lead heading into the final media timeout of the half. The Mountaineers got a little closer with IUP going into the break with a 35-31 lead.
The Mountaineers cut their deficit to two with a bucket to open the second half, but IUP reeled off 11 straight points, capped off by a three-pointer from Fairman with 16:38 to play. Mansfield got the Crimson Hawks' lead back down to nine points before the midway point of the half, but IUP held off any kind of surge and led by as many as 18 points en route to the easy PSAC crossover victory.
The Crimson Hawks turned the ball over just 12 times and shot 40.3 percent – 25-of-62 – from the floor, including 9-of-20 from three-point range. They also finished 19-of-26 from the foul line, with Wareham going 5-of-7 and Stamp finishing 4-of-5. IUP also outrebounded Mansfield 44 to 26.
It was Stamp's eighth 20-point effort of the season as she leads the PSAC in scoring at 20.5 points per game.
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) collected nine rebounds while
Melanie Todd (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) came off the bench to grab eight boards.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Lock Haven to play the Bald Eagles. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
