INDIANA, PA -Â
Darian Bradley (Midland, Pa./Beaver)Â ran for 92 yards and four touchdowns andÂ
Walt Pegues (Philadelphia, Pa. /Central) set a school record with a 96-yard punt return for a touchdown as the Crimson Hawks defeated Seton Hill 51-28 on Homecoming at Miller Stadium on Saturday.
The Crimson Hawks scored 24 of their 51 points in the fourth quarter alone, separating themselves from Seton Hill, which trailed just 27-21 after three quarters.
Bradley scored on runs of one, 10, 18 and 14 yards, with the last two coming in the span of 57 seconds in the final quarter. It's the first time since Mike Jemison in 2003 that an IUP player has rushed for four touchdowns in a single game.
It was the Crimson Hawks' fourth win in a row as they improve to 5-1 on the season. Also, their win coupled with a 48-26 victory by California (PA) over Slippery Rock earlier today, created a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC West as all three teams have 4-1 records.
Pegues' record-setting punt return was the first score of the game, fielding it in the shadow of his own end zone, making some moves to his left and getting good blocks to go untouched down the sideline for the score. He ended up totaling 194 total return yards on a combined six kickoff and punt returns.Â
Â
It was the first of four total touchdowns in the first quarter, as the game was tied 14-14 heading to the second.
Luigi Lista-Brinza (McKees Rocks, Pa. /Central Catholic) scored IUP's other touchdown, a two-yard plunge with 5:43 left in the first, which put the Crimson Hawks on top 14-7 at the time.
Â
Seton Hill put up big offensive numbers in the first quarter, as quarterback Drew Jackson went 18-for-24 for 189 yards and a touchdown in the first 15 minutes.
Â
With all of the fireworks in the first quarter, there was just one score in the second, as Bradley got his first score of the game on a one-yard rush with 4:15 left before the half. The score came after a three-play, 51-yard drive that also included a 24-yard
Chase Haslett (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) to
Drew Carswell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Sto-Rox) pass play, and a 26-yard Lista-Brinza rush. The drive started after a Jackson pass was picked off by
Jake Campbell (Sarver, Pa. /Freeport) at IUP's 49-yard line.
Â
The Crimson Hawks began the second half with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Bradley's 10-yard score to put IUP on top 27-14 after the extra point by
Brett Ullman (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). Lista-Brinza, Bradley and
Chris Temple (Malvern, Pa. /Great Valley) had a combined seven carries for 63 yards on the drive, while Pegues had a pair of receptions for 27 yards.
Â
Seton Hill made a big special teams play on IUP's ensuing drive, blocking a
Matt Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) punt and returning it 14 yards for a touchdown to make it a six-point game going into the final quarter.
Â
That's when IUP kicked it into overdrive, with the defense forcing three turnovers and the offense scoring 24 points to put the game away.
Â
Ullman started things off with a 31-yard field goal that came at the end of a 13-play, 61-yard drive and lasted 7:13. After a 75-yard Seton Hill touchdown drive, the Crimson Hawks answered with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Haslett to
Drew Carswell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Sto-Rox) to take a 37-28 lead. The next Griffins' drive ended on a fourth down, and Bradley picked up his third touchdown of the game after three of his rushes covered 39 yards before the score.
Â
The ensuing Seton Hill drive lasted just three plays, with
Shane Meisner (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield ) one-handing an interception and returning it to the Griffins 14-yard line. Bradley converted his final score on the very next play, putting the game away for good.
The Crimson Hawks totaled 224 yards on 46 carries, with Lista-Brinza finishing with 108 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. IUP got another 225 yards through the air from Haslett, It was a new season-high from him, as he completed 14-of-23 passes with that touchdown. Carswell caught seven passes for a career-high 131 yards and a score.
Brock DeCicco (Jefferson Hills, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) added three catches for 50 yards and Pegues finished with three receptions for 36.
Â
Defensively,
Allen Wright (McKeesport, Pa. /McKeesport Area)Â had a team-high 11 total tackles, including three for-loss.Â
Kevin Clarke (West Mifflin, Pa. /West Mifflin) also picked off a pass along with Campbell and Meisner.
