INDIANA, PA – Despite a pair of close sets, the IUP women's volleyball team dropped a straight set decision to visiting Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match on Saturday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.
The loss drops the Crimson Hawks to 6-10 overall and 2-7 in the PSAC. Gannon, one of the top teams in the division, improves to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference. The Golden Knights won by set scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-22.
The Crimson Hawks trailed by three or more points several times during the second set, but kept rallying to keep it close. They eventually took a 20-19 lead late in the game, but the Golden Knights bounced back with a 3-0 run, and scored six of the final eight points to earn the win.
Down 7-4 in the third set, IUP put together a 6-0 run with
Kaitlyn Palmer (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) serving to take a 10-7 lead. The Crimson Hawks later held a 14-12 lead before Gannon reeled off four straight to go on top 16-14. The set would be tied at 17-17 and later IUP trailed by one at 20-19, but again Gannon finished strong, scoring five of the final eight points to clinch the match.
Alexis Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield) had a team-high eight kills for the Crimson Hawks, adding three block assists.
Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot) also had three block assists with six kills.
Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) tallied 27 assists and
Joie Hrapla (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Bishop Canevin) had 13 digs.
The Crimson Hawks host the PSAC East-West Crossover next weekend, playing West Chester and Cheyney on Friday and East Stroudsburg and Kutztown on Saturday.
