Matt Nakagama (Columbia, Md. /Atholton) and
Yuri Fernandes (Brazil) each won two individual events and the IUP men's swimmers had 20 total qualifying times as the Crimson Hawks easily handled Shippensburg 135-66 on Saturday at the Pidgeon Natatorium.
Nakagama's wins came in the 500 and 1000 freestyle with times of 4:52.62 and 10:05.78, respectively. Both of those were also good enough for Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship meet qualifying times.
Fernandes notched victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle. His 100 time was 47:57 while his 200 was recorded at 1:43.59. Just like Nakagama's, his winning times were both PSAC qualifiers.
Other winners on the day included
Andrew Richey (Warminster, Pa. /William Tennent) in the 50 freestyle (21.71),
Zach Fountain (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) in the 200 IM (1:57.47),
Ben Adams (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs) in the 100 butterfly (52.05) and
Rudy Da Costa (Durban, KZN, South Africa/Westville Boys') in the 100 backstroke (53.05). Each of those times were also PSAC qualifying times.
Other swimmers to hit qualifying marks were
Alex Plimpton (Harrison City, Pa. /Penn-Trafford) and
Chris Strauss (Allentown, Pa. /Parkland) in the 500 and 1000 freestyle;
Alex Cummings (Altoona, Pa. /Altoona) in the 200 freestyle;
Paul Singerman (Apollo, Pa. /Kiski) in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke;
Corey Stouffer (York, Pa. /Dallastown) in the 500 freestyle;
Adam Motter (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) in the 100 butterfly; and
Mace Long (Hollidaysburg, Pa. /Holidaysburg) in the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke.
It'll be another three weeks until the Crimson Hawks return to the pool, as they head to the University of Pittsburgh for the Pitt Invitational on Nov. 21-23.
