Women's Soccer Ends Regular Season in 1-1 Tie With Mercyhurst

UPDATE: With a win on Saturday, Gannon moved one point ahead of the Crimson Hawks in the standings to take over the seventh seed in the PSAC championships. IUP still owns the tiebreaker with Millersville and secured the eighth seed. The Crimson Hawks will travel to No. 1 seed East Stroudsburg on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round.

INDIANA, PA - The Crimson Hawks women's soccer team finished their regular season in a 1-1 tie with Mercyhurst Saturday at the South Campus Field.

The first half proved to be a battle for each team, and the Lakers and Crimson Hawks went into halftime with no score on the board.

Just 12 minutes into the second half, Brittney Kuhns (Middleburg, Pa. /Midd-West) dribbled the ball down the left side of the field and fired into the net for the first goal of the game, her 9th of the season.  It was a short-lived lead for IUP, with the Lakers coming back just 16 minutes later to tie the game 1-1.

Both overtime periods showed the two teams defensive strengths with neither team recording a single shot on goal throughout the 20 minutes.

Overall the Crimson Hawks outshot the Lakers 10-7.  In addition to Kuhns, Victoria Crawford (Port Matilda, Pa. /State College), Lexie Palluconi (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport) and Alyanna James (Newmarket, Ont./Newmarket) tallied shots.

This tie-game earned IUP the 7th seed in the PSAC standings, granting them a playoff berth.  Tied with Millersville with 26 points each, the Crimson Hawks will take the seventh spot, with Millersville moving to the eighth due to an IUP defeat of the Marauders, 2-1, earlier in the season.

Other teams to earn playoff spots are East Stroudsburg (1), West Chester (2), Kutztown (3), California (4), Slippery Rock (5), and Edinboro (6).

Tuesday, the Crimson Hawks will travel to West Chester to face the Golden Rams in the first round of PSAC post-season play.
