INDIANA, PA –
Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) drilled six three-pointers and scored 22 points to help the 15th-ranked Crimson Hawks to an easy 93-67 over visiting Johnson C. Smith on Saturday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
The win was the second of the weekend for IUP, as the Crimson Hawks hosted the Atlantic Region Conference Challenge.
The Golden Bulls, 0-2 this weekend, started the game with an early 8-6 lead before a Dyer three-pointer jumpstarted a 14-4 run that put the Crimson Hawks on top 22-12 at the 10:31 mark. Johnson C. Smith narrowed it to seven a few minutes later, until yet another three by Dyer led to 14 consecutive points by the Crimson Hawks as they took a commanding 43-22 lead with 3:20 left before the half.
Both teams traded buckets in the final minutes as
Tevin Hanner (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) converted a couple of foul shots to give IUP a 50-30 lead heading into the break.
The Crimson Hawks made eight total three-pointers in the first half in 13 attempts, including five off the hand of Dyer.
Stefan Osborne (Victoria, Australia/St. Patrick's College) came off the bench to make 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.
IUP scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second half to open up a 28-point lead, and later got up to 30 at 64-34 with a layup by
Cornell Yarde II (Reading, Pa. /Schuylkill Valley). A highlight shortly after came from Hanner, who used a nice pass from
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) for a monster dunk to make it a 71-41 game at the midway point.
The Crimson Hawk kept the lead around 30 points the rest of the way, getting past the 90-point mark on Dyer's final three of the night, and milking away the 26-point victory.
IUP shot 31-of-62 from the floor on the night, including 11-of-21 from three-point range. The Crimson Hawks also finished 20-of-24 from the foul line.
Dyer added five assists and five rebounds to his 22 points. Chance added 12 points and six assists while
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) and Hanner each had 10 points.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Wednesday night when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at the KCAC. Tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
