Ugbede’s Double-Double Not Enough in 77-72 Exhibition Loss at USF

Box Score (PDF)

TAMPA – Daddy Ugbede (San Mateo, Calif./Serra) scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes as IUP fell to South Florida 77-72 in the Crimson Hawks final exhibition game of the 2014 preseason on Saturday afternoon at the Sun Dome.

Ugbede fouled out after 20 minutes on the floor, going 6-of-11 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the foul line. Six of his 10 rebounds came on the offensive side.

Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) and Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) also reached double-figures in scoring with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Dyer almost reached a double-double, adding nine rebounds, and made 4-of-7 three-point attempts.

The Crimson Hawks outshot USF, going 24-of-54 (44.4 percent) from the field while the Bulls finished 24-of-55 (43.6 percent). IUP also went 8-of-16 from three-point range and outrebounded USF 35-to-33, but turned the ball over 17 times on the night.

The first half featured several ties and lead changes as neither team was able to hold onto a lead until IUP jumped on top by seven points at the nine-minute mark. The lead came after a 7-0 run by the Crimson Hawks, with Ugbede converting four free throws and Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) nailing a three to contribute to the run.

The Bulls responded with a 10-0 run and led by as many as three points before the Crimson Hawks tied the score with an Ugbede layup to go into the break tied at 37-37.

The game was tied early in the second half at 40-40 before the Crimson Hawks took a 52-49 lead after a dunk by Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown). The Bulls then used a 15-2 run to take a 10-point lead at 64-54 with just over nine minutes left. A three-pointer by Dyer stopped the run, but USF got its lead to 11 before a 9-2 run – capped off by an Ugbede layup – by the Crimson Hawks made it a 70-66 game with 4:29 to go.

The Bulls kept IUP at arm's reach the rest of the game, not allowing the Crimson Hawks to get any closer than three points down the stretch to pull out the five-point victory.

This was the Crimson Hawks' final exhibition game of the preseason as they open up their regular season schedule next weekend with the Atlantic Region Conference Challenge in Indiana. IUP will host the four-team tournament and play Urbana on Friday night and Johnson C. Smith on Saturday evening.
