ResultsWHEELING, WV – The Crimson Hawks men's and women's swimming teams set seven pool records as they cruised to easy dual meet victories as IUP traveled to West Virginia to take on Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday afternoon.
The men won 129-66 while the women defeated the Cardinals 125.5-74.5, as both teams continued their success this year as the 2014-15 season hits its midpoint.
Five pool records were set on the men's side, with
Yuri Fernandes (Brazil) posting a pair in the 100 freestyle and 200 IM. He posted a time of 47.13 in the 100 free and touched the wall in 1:55.00 in the 200 IM. He also had a hand in the record 200 freestyle relay, joining
Andrew Richey (Warminster, Pa. /William Tennent),
Paul Singerman (Apollo, Pa. /Kiski) and
Rudy Da Costa (Durban, KZN, South Africa/Westville Boys') in swimming a time of 1:25.86.
Richey and Da Costa also had individual pool records of their own. Richey swam the 50 yard freestyle in 21.67 while Da Costa had a time of 52.54 in the 100 yard backstroke.
The men boasted five more first place finishes on the day, including
Brandon Hopkins (Marion, Va./Marion) in the 1000 yard freestyle,
Chris Strauss (Allentown, Pa. /Parkland) in the 200 yard freestyle,
Ben Adams (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs) in the 200 yard butterfly and
Matt Nakagama (Columbia, Md. /Atholton) in the 500 yard freestyle. The 400 yard medley relay of Da Costa,
Zach Fountain (Springfield, Va./West Springfield),
Adam Motter (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Richey also took home first place.
On the women's side, their 400 yard medley relay team of
Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring),
Paige Spradling (Lancaster, Pa. /Hempfield),
Allie Humphries (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) and
Taylor Snyder (Titusville, Pa. /Titusville) broke the pool record with a time of 4:06.37.
Aniella Janosky (Dover/Dover Area) also set a pool record, finishing with a time of 2:09.56 in the 200 yard butterfly.
Other highlights for the women include six more individual event winners, including a second victory by Janosky in the 200 yard freestyle. Other winners were
Nicole Stevenson (Delmont, Pa. /Franklin Regional) in the 100 yard freestyle,
Beatriz Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) in the 500 yard freestyle, Shumaker in the 100 yard backstroke, Snyder in the 50 yard freestyle, and Spradling in the 200 yard IM.
Both teams will return to the pool to compete in the South Florida Relays in South Beach Gardens against West Chester on Jan. 11.
