No. 24 Men’s Basketball Outlasts Bloomsburg in Overtime

BLOOMSBURG, PA – Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) scored nine of his 19 points in overtime as he helped lift the 24th-ranked Crimson Hawks to an 80-70 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House.

Heading into the overtime period tied at 64-64, IUP scored the first five points, highlighted by a three-point play by Norfleet. He then went on to make another bucket and hit all four of his free throw attempts to ice the win.

The Crimson Hawks forced Bloomsburg into 2-of-7 shooting to go along with two turnovers in the overtime period. The Huskies didn't help themselves by shooting just 2-of-5 from the foul line in the extra five minutes.

IUP improves to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Bloomsburg falls to 6-4 and 2-4.

IUP overcame a tough Bloomsburg team, as the Huskies held an eight-point lead at the 17-minute mark in the second half. The Crimson Hawks responded to that deficit with an 11-2 run to take a one-point lead and went back and forth with Bloomsburg the rest of the way.

The second half featured six ties and five lead changes, with IUP taking a 64-61 lead on a free throw by Daddy Ugbede (San Mateo, Calif./Serra) with 2:48 to go in regulation. The game would then go scoreless until IUP gave Bloomsburg the ball after a missed shot with under one minute to play. Jon Riles then drilled a three-pointer to tie the game with 42 seconds to go.

Each team would have a chance to take the lead, but the shots would not fall, sending the game to overtime.

It was an even first half with seven ties and five lead changes before Bloomsburg went into the break with a 35-31 lead.

Norfleet went 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-7 from the foul line in 39 minutes. He also added six rebounds and three assists to his 19 points.

Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) finished with 17 points and three assists in 43 minutes while Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) added 15 points, five rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes.

The Crimson Hawks now head into winter break and return to the court for a pair of road PSAC crossovers at East Stroudsburg on Jan. 3 and West Chester on Jan. 4.
