Men's Swimming Claims Victory on Senior Day at Crimson Hawk Invite

INDIANA, PA – The IUP men's swim team claimed one dual victory in the Crimson Hawk Invitational finishing the day with 25 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying times and one NCAA B mark.

The Crimson Hawks defeated Gannon 248-110, but fell to Bloomsburg 206-169.

IUP got things started off hot right away in the 500 yard freestyle as four swimmers hit PSAC marks. Chris Strauss (Allentown/Parkland) took first place with a time of 4:47.68. He was followed by Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) in second place with a time of 4:48.14. In fourth and fifth place was Alex Plimpton (Harrison City/Penn-Trafford) and Matt Nakagama (Columbia, MD/Atholton) who finished with times of 4:49.91 and 4:52.96, respectively.

In the 200 yard individual medely, Ben Adams (Katy, TX/Cypress Springs) finished in third place with a PSAC qualifying time of 1:59.48. Zach Fountain (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) also hit a PSAC mark with a time of 2:01.27.

Three Crimson Hawks qualified for the PSAC championships in the 50 yard freestyle. Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) finished in second place with a time of 21.83 followed by Andrew Richey (Warminster/William Tennent) in fourth place with a time of 22.36 and Paul Singerman (Apollo/Kiski) in fifth place with a time of 22.38.

Hopkins, Nakagama, Alex Hampel (Middletown, Del/Salesianum), Alexander Cattafesta and Vincent Hall (Greencastle/Greencastle-Atrim) hit PSAC standards in the 400 yard individual medely. Hopkins took first place with a time of 4:19.18 followed by Nakagama in third place with a time of 4:22.03. In sixth place was Hampel finishing with a time of 4:28.83. Cattafesta and Hall finished in ninth and 11th places with times of 4:30.54 and 4:32.58, respectively.

Long led the way in the 100 yard butterfly with a NCAA B time of 49.68. In that race, Adams finished with a PSAC mark of 52.32.

In the 200 yard freestyle, Strauss and Plimpton hit PSAC standards with times of 1:46.34 and 1:48.79.

Foutain took second place in the 100 yard breaststroke with at finish of 1:00.72 and Singerman finished in seventh in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.66. Both times were PSAC marks.

Hopkins and Plimpton hit PSAC marks finishing in second and third place in the 1,000 yard freestyle with times of 9:51.73 and 10:00.49.

In the 200 yard breaststroke Alex Cummings (Altoona/Altoona) finished in fourth place with a PSAC qualifying time of 2.17.51.

The men closed out a successful night with two PSAC qualifying times in the 200 yard butterfly from Adams and Nakagama. Adams finished in first place with a time of 1:57.49 and Nakagama claimed fourth place with a time of 2:02.31.

In the 400 yard medely relay, a team consisting of Singerman, Fountain, Long and Richey took first place with a time of 3:33.05. The Crimson Hawks also finished first in the 200 yard medely relay with a time of 1:36.80 led by Singerman, Fountain, Long and Richey.

On the day, the Crimson Hawks took six first place finishes. They also honored the six seniors, Hall, Conrad Kubaney (Erie/Mercyhurst Prep), Long, Logan Mudlo (Kittanning/Kittanning), Bobby Sciscento (Lancaster/Manheim Township) and Sean Smith (Annandale, VA/Annandale).

The men will return to the pool for the PSAC championships Feb. 20 through Feb. 23 in York, Pa.
