Stamp Scores 18 in Return as IUP's Upset Bid Falls Short to No. 3 Gannon

Box Score

INDIANA, PA – Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) scored a game-high 18 points off the bench in her return but it wasn't enough as the IUP women's basketball team's upset bid fell short in a 73-64 loss to No. 3 Gannon on Saturday night.

The Crimson Hawks played in front of a Kovalchick Complex women's basketball record crowd of 1,233.

IUP falls to 15-8 on the season and remain in fourth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with a 6-7 record. Gannon improves to 23-2 overall and 12-2 in the division, good for second.

After missing six games and seeing the court for the first time in nearly a month, Stamp finished 7-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range in 30 minutes. Entering the game with the Crimson Hawks down 12-9 early, she aided in a 19-7 run over a 4:50 time span as IUP took a 28-19 lead. Stamp scored 10 points during the run, including three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to cap the run.

Another three-pointer by Stamp just minutes later gave the Crimson Hawks their largest lead at 34-21 with 7:53 left in the half.

Gannon, however, responded to the three with a 12-2 run to cut its deficit to three as IUP would later go into halftime with a 38-33 lead.

IUP's lead was back to three early in the second half before back-to-back layups by Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) made it a seven-point game and forced a Gannon timeout with 16:38 on the clock.

The Golden Knights refused to go away, matching IUP shot-for-shot before a three-pointer by Mollie Sebald gave them a 55-53 lead with 9:34 left. It was Gannon's first lead since that 12-9 score, a time span of 25:10.

A layup by Jen Papich put Gannon on top by six at 64-58 with just under four minutes to go, but the Crimson Hawks twice got their deficit back to four points over the next 1:41. However, Gannon would make 5-of-6 foul shots and convert a layup down the stretch while IUP went just 1-of-5 from the field in the nine-point decision.

Stapleton scored 17 points and had five rebounds while Talen Watson (Odenton, MD/Arundel) added 10 points and dished out five assists. Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) scored nine points with a team-high seven rebounds and three steals. Stamp added five rebounds and three steals.

The Crimson Hawks have three games remaining in the regular season, with Mercyhurst on Wednesday night in the KCAC. They'll then host division-leading Edinboro next Saturday and finish up on the road the following week at rival Slippery Rock.
