No. 41 Women’s Tennis Falls to Carnegie Mellon

MONROEVILLE, PA – The 41st-ranked IUP women's tennis team fell to Carnegie Mellon, the ninth-ranked team in Division III, 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Monroeville Club for Life.

Carnegie Mellon jumped on top of the Crimson Hawks with wins at the top two doubles spots. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) fell 8-5 at number one while Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) lost 8-1 at number two.

IUP then finished off the doubles round with an 8-6 win at number three, as Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) defeated Nicholle Torres and Katie Cecil 8-6.

However, the match was dominated by the Tartans the rest of the way, with five of the six singles matches coming in two sets. At number two, McCormick took Angela Pratt to three sets, winning the first 6-2 before dropping the next two 6-3 and 7-6 (3).

The Crimson Hawks are back in action next Sunday, Feb. 23 when they travel to Olean, N.Y. to battle Division I St. Bonaventure.
