OLEAN, NY – After taking a point with three doubles wins, the Crimson Hawks dropped four singles matches as the IUP women's tennis team fell to Division I St. Bonaventure 4-3 in a tough fought match on Sunday evening in New York.
According to Division I rules, the team with the most victories in the three doubles matches earns one point.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) picked up the win at number one doubles with an 8-2 victory.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and Ericka Schnaas then paired at number two for an 8-5 victory. The Crimson Hawks tacked on a win by default at the third doubles spot.
St. Bonaventure picked up three straight victories as the match moved to singles play. Butland fell at number three 6-1, 6-4; Timko lost at the top spot 6-3, 6-3; and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) lost at number four 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) earned a victory at number five, winning 6-0, 6-0. The Crimson Hawks got a win at number six with another default victory.
Tied at 3-3, the match came down to the number two singles spot, as McCormick dropped a three-set decision to Marissa Brossard 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
The Crimson Hawks are off until next weekend when they play Denison on March 1.
