44th-Ranked Crimson Hawks Easily Defeat Denison

PITTSBURGH – The 44th-ranked Crimson Hawks took five of six singles matches as IUP handled Denison 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis & Fitness of Pittsburgh.

Denison entered as one of the top Division III teams in the nation, ranked No. 30 by the ITA.

The Crimson Hawks started the match 2-0 with a pair of doubles victories. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) got an 8-2 win over Meg Chiumento and Emily Holloway at No. 1 while Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) paired with Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) for another 8-2 win, this one at No. 3 over Heather Abzug and Eleni Coleman.

The lone doubles loss came at No. 2 with Ericka Schnaas and Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) getting edged by Kelsey Geppner and Sarah Torrence, 8-6.

IUP increased its 2-1 lead with four consecutive singles victories, including the clinching victory at No. 4 as Schnaas defeated Lauren Schechtman 6-4, 6-0. The only loss for the Crimson Hawks in singles play came at No. 1 with Timko dropping a three-setter to Geppner. She took the first set 6-4 before falling 6-4 and 10-5.

Also picking up wins for IUP on the singles side were McCormick 6-4, 6-2 over Chiumento; Butland 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 over Holloway; Mahto 7-5, 6-2 over Coleman; and Wood 6-2, 6-3 over Torrence.

It was the Crimson Hawks first win of the spring portion of their season as they improve to 3-3 on the year. They're in action again this weekend as they take on Seton Hill on Sunday at the Greensburg Raquet Club.
