Women’s Basketball Ends Season with Loss to Edinboro in PSAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) scored a game-high 21 points but the Crimson Hawks couldn't stop a hot-shooting Edinboro team as IUP lost to the Fighting Scots 79-60 in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Basketball Championships.

Stoner finished the game 9-of-12 from the floor and added three more from the foul line, collecting four rebounds in 33 minutes.

The Fighting Scots, however, shot 63 percent from the floor and drained 6-of-9 three-pointers in the first half as they built a 40-24 lead heading into halftime.

A three-pointer by Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) on the game's first possession showed positive signs for the Crimson Hawks, who built a 13-6 lead less than seven minutes in. Edinboro responded by rolling off a dominant 28-2 run over an 8:45 span to take a 34-15 lead with 4:38 on the clock.

IUP scored nine of the last 15 points as the Fighting Scots went into the break with a 16-point lead.

Edinboro got its lead up to 17 at 49-32 less than four minutes into the second half, but Stoner and Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) scored five straight IUP points to cut its deficit to 12. The Fighting Scots then went on a 24-6 run to take a 30-point lead and put the game away.

Stamp was the only other IUP player to reach double-figures in scoring with 13 points, barely missing her second straight double-double with nine rebounds with three assists.

Edinboro, the top seed in the PSAC West, improves to 22-5 overall on the season and advance to the conference semifinals where they'll play West Chester. The Fighting Scots will host the PSAC Final Four.

This loss ends the Crimson Hawks season at 18-10 overall. The fourth seed in the PSAC West finished 8-8 in the division. The Crimson Hawks set two school records this year with 195 three-pointers and a 38.2 three-point percentage. Those bested the old marks of 184 (2009-10) and 35.8 (2003-04), respectively.
