Box Score INDIANA, PA –
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) secured the clinching singles win to give IUP a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Monday.
Wood defeated Taylor Wedlake 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 at the No. 5 spot for the match win. The Crimson Hawks, the second seed in the PSAC West, now advance to the semifinals where they will face East No. 1 Bloomsburg on Thursday.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) had IUP's other win in singles play, defeating Courtney Thompson 6-3, 6-4 and avenging the regular season loss just 13 days ago.
Three singles matches went unfinished, including
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Caroline Bristol at No. 1, who were battling back-and-forth at 6-4, 3-6, 1-1.
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) was unfinished at No. 3 4-6, 5-4 and so was
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) at No. 6 7-6 (7-5), 3-3.
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) retired at No. 4.
The Crimson Hawks easily swept doubles play, starting off with Timko and Schnaas defeating Bristol and Sarah Baich 8-1 at No. 1. Butland and McFail got an 8-4 victory over Thompson and Annie Baich at No. 2 and Mahto and Wood defeated Katelyn Caniford and Wedlake 8-4 at No. 3.
West Chester will be hosting the semifinals and finals of the PSAC championships on Thursday and Friday. IUP's semifinal match with the Huskies is scheduled for 3 p.m. West No. 1 California (PA) will face the winner of West Chester (East No. 2) and Kutztown (East No. 3). The winners will face each other on Friday at noon.
