Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) extended her winning streak and five singles matches went just two sets as 44th-ranked IUP shutout Edinboro 9-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
It was IUP's final PSAC West match of the regular season as the Crimson Hawks will head into next week's conference tournament as the second seed in the division with a 5-1 record. They are also 13-7 overall.
Edinboro drops to 9-10 overall and 1-3 in the West.
It was Timko's ninth consecutive singles win, with six of those wins coming against Atlantic Region ranked opponents. Two other wins came against ranked opponents in the East and Midwest.
Timko defeated Oranza Carillo, the 19th-ranked player in the region, by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. She improves her record to 20-9 overall in singles play, including 15-5 in dual matches and 6-0 in PSAC West play.
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) blanked RyAnne' Baldwin 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) defeated Raquel Holiday 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Other Crimson Hawks to get victories in singles action were
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 at No. 5 and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School), still battling sickness, had a comeback win at No. 2, defeating Julia Hellstern 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.
McFail and Butland earned an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles while Mahto and Wood picked up an 8-2 win at No. 3. Timko and Schnaas got their eighth win in nine matches with an 8-3 victory at No. 1.
The Crimson Hawks will face a pair of non-conference opponents in Wayne State and Grand Valley State this weekend, both at home.
The PSAC championships start with the quarterfinal round next Monday, April 14. As the No. 2 seed, IUP will host the No. 3 seed, which is still yet to be determined. From there, the tournament moves to West Chester for the semifinals (Thursday) and championship (Friday).
