Men's and Women's Swimming Successful in Victory over Clarion

Results

CLARION, PA - IUP men's and women's swimming earn victories against the Golden Eagles Friday in Clarion.  The men finished with a score of 120-116, and the women finished 153-80.  This event marks the team's seventh competition of the season.

In the men's events, the Crimson Hawks finished first in 10 out of 11 total events, with the women finishing first in 11 out of 14 events.

By the end of the night, the women's team had earned seven Pennsylvania State Athletic Association (PSAC) qualifying times.  These times, captured in five different events, were swam by Beatriz Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain), Dana Steinert (Kent, Ohio/Kent Theodore Roosevelt), Aniella Janosky (Dover/Dover Area), Taylor Snyder (Titusville, Pa. /Titusville), Allison Humphries and Paige Spralding.

The men's team finished with 16 total PSAC qualifying times in eight different events.  These times were earned by Brandon Hopkins (Marion, Va./Marion), Alex Plimpton (Harrison City, Pa. /Penn-Trafford), Andrew Richey (Warminster, Pa. /William Tennent), Yuri Fernandes (Brazil), Matthew Nakagama, Benjamin Adams, Mace Long (Hollidaysburg, Pa. /Holidaysburg), Paul Singerman (Apollo, Pa. /Kiski), Rudy Da Costa (Durban, KZN, South Africa/Westville Boys'), Chris Strauss (Allentown, Pa. /Parkland), Zach Fountain (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), Shane Hallett (Boiling Springs, Pa. /Boiling Springs) and Alex Cummings (Altoona, Pa. /Altoona).

In the 400 yard freestyle relay, both the men and women edged Clarion by seconds.  The women - Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring), Snyder, Gabriella Guttman (Allentown, Pa. /Salisbury ) and Humphries - finished in 3:37.06, just four seconds before the Golden Eagles touched the wall.  On the men's end, Fernandes, Singerman, Richey and Fountain finished in 3:15.62.  Clarion came in a total 11 seconds behind the Crimson Hawks.

While these relay times helped IUP find this conference win, they were not enough to qualify in the NCAA.

Next week, the Crimson Hawks will host the Crimson Hawk Dual Challenge in the Pidgeon Natatorium.  Friday and Saturday, IUP will swim against PSAC opponents Bloomsburg and Gannon.  This meet will be the team's last chance to earn NCAA or PSAC qualifying times before the championships in February and March.
