INDIANA, PA –
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) scored a game-high 19 points to help the 20th-ranked Crimson Hawks to a 84-62 win over Cheyney in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
The junior guard scored 11 of his 19 points from the foul line in his first game against his former team. Norfleet stared at Cheyney where he was named the 2013 PSAC East Freshman of the Year.
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) tallied his third career double-double with 12 points and 10 assists on the night. It's the second time this season the senior has dished out double-figure assists.
IUP picked up its sixth consecutive victory to improve to 13-2 overall and 7-2 in the PSAC. It's the Crimson Hawks second longest winning streak of the season behind their seven straight to open the season. They remain in a tie with Slippery Rock for second in the Western Division. Cheyney falls to 1-13 and 0-9 in the conference.
IUP led nearly the entire game, but Cheyney played tough in the early going. The game was knotted at 9-9 at the 15-minute mark before
Cornell Yarde II (Reading, Pa. /Schuylkill Valley) broke the tie with a three-pointer. That jumpstarted a 13-4 run for the Crimson Hawks as they took a 22-13 lead.
The Wolves clawed back, later going on a 12-5 run to cut their deficit to 32-30 with 2:10 left in the half. IUP rebounded to score seven of the last eight points before the break to take a 39-31 lead into the locker room.
The IUP offense heated up in the second half, with Norfleet leading an early 11-2 Crimson Hawks' run as they took a 52-38 lead less than five minutes in.
Tevin Hanner (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) also sparked the Crimson Hawks, playing well on both sides of the floor to help IUP extend its lead to 17 at 60-43 with 10:55 left in the game.
Hanner finished the game with a season-high 15 points, netting 10 in just nine minutes in the second half.
Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) also hit several shots down the stretch, including a three from the corner to help Chance notch his 10th assist of the night with 6:02 left. The senior was the fourth member of the team to score in double-figures, also netting a season-high 15 points.
The Crimson Hawks kept Cheyney at arm's reach the remainder of the game, finishing the Wolves off with a 13-3 run to end the game and pick up the 22-point victory.
IUP shot 48.2 percent from the field and went 24-of-31 from the free throw line.
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) also nearly went for a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, adding a pair of blocks in 21 minutes.
Rasahn Brinkley led Cheyney with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Larkin added 18.
The Crimson Hawks will go for seven straight wins when they head to California (PA) to take on the surging Vulcans (11-4, 7-3) this Saturday. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
