Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Gannon in Upset Victory in Erie

ERIE, Pa. – Sophomore Gabrielle Egler (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Obama Academy) had seven kills and totaled six blocks in IUP's straight set upset win over Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's volleyball match on Friday night at the Hammermill Center.
 
It was the Crimson Hawks' second straight shutout victory of the week, this one a win over the second ranked school in the PSAC Western Division. IUP improved to 15-9 overall and an even 7-7 in the division. Gannon fell to 18-9 overall and 11-3 in the West.
 
Egler hit .462 in the match and totaled 10.0 points. The six total blocks were a season-high.
 
The Crimson Hawks took the first set 25-20 and won the second and third by identical 25-21 scores.
 
IUP never trailed in the opener, breaking open a 16-14 game with a 3-0 run and later scored the final three points, including a service ace from sophomore Natalie Cignetti (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) to end the match. The Crimson Hawks trailed 8-5 in the second set before a timeout jumpstarted a 7-0 run off the serve of Cignetti, as they took a 12-8 lead. They didn't look back from there, again scoring the final three points of the match for the win.
 
The Crimson Hawks got out to a 9-3 lead in the third set and held off several Gannon runs, scoring five of the final seven to close out the shutout victory.
 
Cignetti finished with a team-high 12.5 points with nine kills and three block assists. She also had five digs. Junior Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) had 27 assists and seven digs and freshman Breanna Damiani (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) had eight digs.
 
The Crimson Hawks will face Mercyhurst (12-12, 8-6) in a key PSAC West matchup tomorrow at 4:05 p.m.
