Stapleton Scores Career-High in Women's Basketball's First Loss of Year

INDIANA -- IUP raced out to an early lead, but a career-high 26 points by Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) weren't enough, as No. 25 West Chester handed the Crimson Hawks their first loss of the year Sunday, 92-79.

The loss drops IUP's record to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC. West Chester moves to 3-2 and 2-1 in the conference.

Stapleton's career-high came in large part thanks to six 3-pointers. The redshirt senior finished 6-9 from beyond the arc, and was 9-13 overall from the field, as well as a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line.

Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) had 19 points and six assists, while fellow senior Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) scored 14 and handed out four assists. Sophomore forward Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) just missed scoring in double figures, as she finished with nine points, six rebounds, three assists and four blocks.

IUP raced out of the gates to an 8-0 lead, thanks to 3-pointers by Stapleton and redshirt sophomore Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) and a layup by Brooks. However, West Chester answered the run and took a 50-32 lead into the halftime.

IUP got within single digits late in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.

For the game, the Crimson Hawks shot 52.7 percent from the floor and connected on 11-20 shots from behind the arc.

The Crimson Hawks return to action Tuesday in a non-conference game at Chowan. Tipoff in North Carolina is set for 2 p.m.
