COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Three IUP players reached double-figures in scoring, led by 14 points by senior
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana), but the Crimson Hawks fell to sixth-ranked Maryland 101-56 in a women's basketball exhibition game on Wednesday night at the XFINITY Center.
Stapleton shot 4-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, and made all four foul shots for her 14 points. She played 27 minutes on the night and also led the Crimson Hawks with five rebounds.
Also reaching double-figures for the Crimson Hawks was senior guard
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) with 11 points and sophomore forward
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) with 10. Wareham drained 3-of-6 from three-point range and had three rebounds while Smith finished 4-of-10 from the field and had four rebounds and a steal.
IUP shot just 35.2 percent from the field (19-of-54) but made eight three-pointers on the Terrapins and made 10-of-12 attempts from the foul line.
Maryland shot 46.3 percent on the night and made 20-of-27 foul shots while also out-rebounding the Crimson Hawks 58-to-28. The Terrapins led 57-29 at halftime, but IUP limited them to 44 points and a 44 field goal percentage in the second half.
The Crimson Hawks improved their shooting in the second half, going from 30 percent in the first 20 minutes to 41.7 percent in the third and fourth quarters. IUP also went 5-of-9 from three-point range in the second half compared to just 3-of-16 in the first.
All 12 players saw court action for the Crimson Hawks, with eight reaching the scoring column. Sophomore guard
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic), senior forward Zhané Brooks, and freshman guard
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) each scored six points. Wolosik had a team-high three assists.
This was the first of two exhibition games for the Crimson Hawks, who will play at Pitt this Sunday afternoon. Tipoff at the Petersen Events Center is set for 2 p.m.
