SHIPPENSBURG – Redshirt senior
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) and senior each scored more 20 points as the Crimson Hawks held off a late rally Friday against Shippensburg for an 82-79 victory.
IUP led by 13, 78-65, with 4:26 to play in the fourth quarter before a late rally by Shippensburg saw the Crimson Hawks hold a slim 80-79 lead with 38 seconds remaining. IUP never trailed in the second half.
Stapleton again led the IUP offense, scoring 25 points on 9-14 shooting from the field. She also added four assists and three rebounds in her 39 minutes of court time. This was the second game of the season Stapleton topped the 25-point mark, as she scored a career-high 26 points Nov. 22 vs. West Chester. She brings her career total to 983 points and will enter Saturday's matchup just 17 points shy of becoming the 21st player in program history to hit the 1,000-point milestone.
Wareham continued her strong campaign as the Crimson Hawks' floor general, scoring a career-high 21 points and adding three assists. Her 9-13 shooting day included a 3-5 effort from behind the arc.
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) added 12 points and eight rebounds, while
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) had seven points and seven rebounds for the Crimson Hawks.
As a team, IUP shot 32-62 for 51.6 percent. IUP was a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line.
Now 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC, IUP heads into another away matchup at Kutztown Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
