OBERLIN, OH – The 46th-ranked IUP women's tennis team rattled off eight straight victories to cruise to an 8-1 win over Oberlin indoors at the Herisman Field House in Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
It was the Crimson Hawks' second straight win to open the spring season and it came an Oberlin team that is ranked 32nd in Division III.
The Yeowomen's only win came at the No. 1 doubles spot with Grace Porter and Sarah Hughes defeating
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) 8-4. The Crimson Hawks bounced back with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, with Jarmila Petercakova and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) getting an 8-4 victory in the second spot while
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) teamed with
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) for a 9-7 win in the third pairing.
The top three singles spots took the court first in singles play, as Petercakova defeated Emma Brezel 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3. Gonzalez followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Mayada Audeh and Timko defeated Porter 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1.
McCormick was the next IUP finisher, gaining a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jackie McDermott in the fourth spot.
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Erin Johnson while Von Agris cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Olivia Hay at No. 6.
Timko's singles win was the 73rd of her career, as she again moved up in the school record books to tie former teammate Emilia Osborne for second all-time. She's just nine away from passing
Katie Eaton for career singles wins.
The Crimson Hawks are off for the rest of the month, returning to action on March 1 when they "host" Tiffin at Monroeville's Club for Life. The match is set to start at 3 p.m.
