HILTON HEAD, S.C. – It was a clean sweep for the 42nd-ranked Crimson Hawks as they defeated Chowan 9-0 in a regional women's tennis matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a rematch of last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional first round meeting, which was won by IUP 5-0 at the Maple Street Courts.
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) had IUP's first point, getting an 8-0 win over Straffai Cleveland and Natalia Andrade at the third spot.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) picked up the next win at No. 1 with an 8-4 win over Natalya Kamenshchikova and Victoria Smolchenkova.
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) gave the Crimson Hawks a 3-0 lead with an 8-5 victory over Jessica DeBackre and Polina Novachuk.
Singles play included five two-set victories for the Crimson Hawks, starting with a 6-0, 6-0 win by
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) over Andrade at No. 5. Wood defeated Cleveland 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 and Petercakova took down Novachuk 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
Also winning in two sets were McCormick at four and Von Agris at three. McCormick defeated DeBackre 6-2, 6-1 and Von Agris beat Smolchenkova 6-1, 6-4. Timko had the lone three-set victory, rallying to defeat Kamenshchikova 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 at No. 1.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 4-2 this spring with matches scheduled against Dickinson and Michigan Tech the next two days.
