HILTON HEAD, S.C. – On a rainy day that forced play under sheltered courts, the 42nd-ranked IUP women's tennis team defeated Michigan Tech 8-1 as the Crimson Hawks finish their spring break trip with their third straight win.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) got things started in doubles action with an 8-2 win at the top spot while
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) followed that with an 8-3 victory at two. IUP was awarded a win at three as Michigan Tech defaulted, giving
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) a victory.
Singles matches were played as one-setters to eight points, as Timko tallied the first win with an easy 8-1 victory at one. Gonzalez repeated the result with an 8-1 win at two win Petercakova won 8-3 in the third spot.
Butland scored an 8-2 victory at five and IUP was again awarded a victory at six with Von Agris picking up a win by default. Michigan Tech got its win at four as McCormick fell by a score of 8-6.
IUP improved to 6-2 on the season with the win. The Crimson Hawks are in action again on Sunday, March 22 at Division I St. Bonaventure.
