IUP Advances to Semifinals of Atlantic Regional with win over Glenville State

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – Five Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures to lift third-seeded IUP to a 73-53 victory over sixth-seeded Glenville State in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday.

IUP advances to Sunday's semifinal round to play the winner of Gannon and Slippery Rock, the second and seventh seeds, respectively, in the region.

Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) scored a game-high 22 points for the Crimson Hawks, finishing 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the foul line. He added five assists and had three steals in 35 minutes.

Joe Lombardi tallied his 200th career win

The Crimson Hawks outshot Glenville State 42 percent to 35 percent from the field and also outrebounded the Pioneers 44-to-31. The main attacker of the glass for IUP was Daddy Ugbede (Gardena, Calif./Serra), who collected a career-high 12 in just 18 minutes off the bench.

The win was also marked the 200th career victory for IUP head coach Joe Lombardi. He became the fastest coach in program history to reach the mark and the second quickest in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history behind Millersville's John Kochan. Lombardi is now 200-76 in his nine seasons at IUP.

IUP improves to 27-6 on the season, the most victories in a season under Lombardi since 2009-10 when he led the Crimson Hawks to a 33-3 overall record and an appearance in the national title game.

The Crimson Hawks controlled the game from the outset, using an 11-0 run to race out to an 18-7 lead midway through the first half. With the exception of 29 seconds where the game was tied at 7-7, IUP led the entire contest.

Glenville State was able to cut its deficit to under 10 with 3:21 to go, but the Crimson Hawks scored seven of the final 10 points to take a 33-20 lead into halftime.

IUP quickly got its lead up to 18 with a 10-2 run to start the second half and led by as many 27 points before finishing off the Pioneers and cruising to the 20-point victory. The winning margin is the largest in NCAA tournament play for IUP since its 104-71 win over Pfeiffer in the 2000 East Region Championship.

Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) scored 12 points, adding four rebounds and four assists while Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) had 10 points and Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) contributed 10. Ugbede also scored 10 points to post his second double-double of the season.

Sunday's Atlantic Region semifinal will tipoff at 5:05 p.m. from the Athletic, Sports & Recreation Complex at West Liberty University.
