Baseball Sweeps Clarion with a Pair of One-Run Wins

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) tossed a complete game three-hitter in the opener, helping the Crimson Hawks to 3-1 and 4-1 victories over Clarion in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) baseball doubleheader at Consol Energy Stadium in Washington, Pa.

The doubleheader was originally slated to be played at IUP's Owen Dougherty Field on Saturday, but ground conditions from this month's snowfall were not conducive for baseball and was moved to Washington.

The Crimson Hawks started the scoring in the first inning as a two-out single by Scott Hess (Erie/Erie Cathedral Prep) brought Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) around from second base. Lupia led off the inning with a walk and later advanced to second on a ground out by Austin Mock (State College, Pa./State College). They picked up their other two runs in the third inning, as a one-out single by Mock was followed by a homerun by Ryan Uhl (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys), his fourth on the year.

Clarion's only run came in the fourth inning, as Zaorski pitched well all day long. That run came after a fielding error, so Zaorski ddin't allow an earned run as he struck out five and walked one in the victory.

The Crimson Hawks opened scoring in the first inning again in game two, as Hess' two-out double brought Uhl around from first. They added another in the second inning, as a single by John Beatty (New Castle/Mohawk) brought Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel) across the plate to make it 2-0. Beatty gave IUP a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning with a solo homer, his first of the year.

An insurance run came across the plate in the seventh, with a leadoff single by Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) eventually leading to a sacrifice fly by Mock. Calliari advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lupia and wound up on third following a wild pitch.

Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge, Pa./Quigley Catholic) got the start for the Crimson Hawks, giving up one hit and one earned run in three innings. Matt Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) entered in the fourth and tossed the next three innings, striking out four and giving up just one hit. Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) followed on the mound in the seventh, working his way out of a bases loaded situation with no outs to pick up his second save of the year without giving up a run.

They were the second and third straight wins for the Crimson Hawks, who improve to 5-5 overall on the season. It was also the conference opener for the Crimson Hawks. They're back in action again this coming weekend with a four-game set with Slippery Rock. IUP will be on the road on Friday and will host SRU on Saturday.
