Second Half Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Lacrosse in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – IUP scored five straight goals to open the second half but couldn't find the net in the last 17 minutes as the Crimson Hawks fell to Queens (N.C.) 13-10 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Monday.

The Crimson Hawks' five goals came at a fast and furious pace over a 5:34 minute span, ending with a Sarah Harshman score with 17:47 to play in the game. The opening score of the second half came off the stick of Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley), her second of the game, with 23:21 on the clock to make it an 11-6 game.

Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) tallied the next goal less than three minutes later, followed by a goal by Tara Nicholas (Germantown, MD/Northwest) just 30 seconds after that, pulling IUP to within three at 11-8.

Hooven scored her third goal with 19:05 to go before Harshman made it a one-score game at 11-10 with just under 18 minutes left to play.

Queens (6-4) stopped the Crimson Hawks' run with a goal at the 14:41 mark and made it a three-goal differential at 13-10 on a score with 10:15 to play.

IUP was limited to just one total shot after its final goal of the game while turning the ball over seven times during that span.

Hooven scored a team-high three goals for the Crimson Hawks, while Nicholas and Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) each added two. Harshman assisted on three IUP goals and Emma Hicks (Reedsville, WV/Morgantown) and Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) both had four draw controls.

The Crimson Hawks had the advantage with 14 draw controls compared to Queens' 11, but the Royals outshout IUP 22-to-15 and forced a total of 20 turnovers on the afternoon.

IUP falls to 1-3 with the loss, its second to a top 20 opponent this season. The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Wednesday when they play Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m.
