OLEAN, N.Y. – The 42nd-ranked IUP women's tennis team was narrowly defeated by St. Bonaventure 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in what has become an annual match against the Division I Bonnies.
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) each tallied singles victories for the Crimson Hawks, while also pairing for a win in doubles play. The 8-3 over victory Fatya Amiri and Dominique Mortier came at the No. 2 spot and was the only doubles win for IUP, as the Bonnies were awarded one point according to Division I rules.
The No. 1 pair of
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) fell 8-6 to Mara Martinez-Santori and Marisa Brossard while
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) fell 8-6 to Mariam Skhirtladze and Francesca Chin at No. 3.
In singles play, the Bonnies opened up with wins at the first two spots as Timko lost to Amiri 6-3, 6-2 and Petercakova fell to Brossard 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, respectively.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) took Skhirtladze to three sets before eventually losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4.
Von Agris' win came at No. 5, rallying to defeat Mortier 3-6, 7-6(7), 10-5. Gonzalez then defeated Martinez 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at three and Wood took down Chin 6-1, 6-1 at the sixth spot.
The Crimson Hawks fall to 6-3 on the season and are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Clarion to face the Golden Eagles.
