CLARION, Pa. – The 42nd-ranked IUP women's tennis team got their third shutout win in their last five matches with a 9-0 victory over Clarion on the road on Tuesday.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 7-3 overall on the season with a perfect 2-0 league mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Clarion falls to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The win followed a narrow 4-3 loss to Division I St. Bonaventure on Sunday, IUP's first loss in four matches.
The Crimson Hawks gave up a combined four points in doubles play, including 8-1 wins at the first and third spots.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) defeated Lauren and Madeline Robinson at No. 1 and the pair of
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) beat Jessica Kennelly and Kaitlyn Mulligan at No. 3.
In the second spot,
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) cruised past Megan Bettwy and Maria Snyder by a score of 8-2.
In singles play, Timko scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first spot over Zezenski, while IUP gave up just one point in three of the remaining five matches. Butland took down Snyder 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 while
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) defeated Kennelly 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Katrince Gransoe beat Jessica Dgien 6-0, 6-1.
Petercakova won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 over Bettwy while
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) defeated Robinson 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 at No. 3.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Friday when they head to Ohio to face Walsh. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
