GREENSBURG, Pa. – Johnathan O'Neill and
Austin Mock (State College, Pa./State College) each hit home runs on Sunday, but the Crimson Hawks dropped both ends of a conference baseball doubleheader to ninth-ranked Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon.
O'Neill's homer came in the first game and ended up being IUP's only runs as the Crimson Hawks fell 7-2. Mock's was a solo shot in 4-2 game two loss.
The Crimson Hawks fall to 8-10 overall and are now an even 4-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. Seton Hill improves to 21-4 and 9-1.
The home run by O'Neill was a two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring while giving IUP an early 2-0 lead. The Griffins picked up one in the fourth after a leadoff double and took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run double and a two-run home run.
The Griffins added two insurance runs in the sixth on a run-scoring single to make it 7-2.
Kyle Zaorski (Reading/Muhlenberg) took the loss for IUP, falling to 2-3 overall after giving up four earned runs on nine hits.
The Crimson Hawks struck first in game two, with O'Neill bringing
Scott Hess (Erie/Erie Cathedral Prep) across the plate with an RBI single to right in the second. Seton Hill tied the game in the third and took a 4-1 lead in the fourth.
Mock's home run came in the fifth, but was the only hit in an inning in which IUP made it a 4-2 ballgame.
That was the last scoring of the game as the Griffins came away with a two-run victory.
Zach Chinchilla (Ambridge, Pa./Quigley Catholic) went six innings in the start for IUP, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. He falls to 2-1 on the season.
