Softball Drops Pair in Florida to Open Season

CLERMONT, Fla – Even with a solid outing in game two, the IUP softball team lost a pair of games as the Crimson Hawks opened up their 2015 season at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.

Cedarville got the best of the Crimson Hawks 10-1 in the first game while Saint Rose won game two over IUP by a score of 2-0.

The opener was finished in five innings as the Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the fourth and another five in the fifth for the mercy. IUP committed four errors in the game as just six of Cedarville's runs were earned.

The Crimson Hawks got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI single to left field by Taylor Mercurio (Pittsburgh/Seton-La Salle). Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) easily scored from third on the base knock. Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) got the start in the circle for IUP, going four innings while giving up five hits and just one earned run. Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area), last year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Freshman of the Year, had two of the Crimson Hawks' four hits in the game.

Cedarville improved to 5-7 on the year with the victory.

Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) got the ball against Saint Rose for the Crimson Hawks, and tossed a complete game, giving up eight hits and just one earned in her seven innings of work. Several times Spindler was able to pitch out of jams as IUP turned in a solid defensive effort.

The Golden Knights picked up its first run in the third inning with a solo homer. The second run crossed the plate in the sixth with the help of an RBI bunt. Spindler was able to get out of the inning without any more damage after Saint Rose put two runners in scoring position with two outs. The Golden Knights improved to 5-6 this season with the win.
