PHILADELPHIA – The 42nd-ranked Crimson Hawks easily took all three doubles matches en route to a 6-3 victory over 44th-ranked Chestnut Hill in non-conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
It was the Crimson Hawks' third win in as many chances this spring, defeating a Chestnut Hill squad that beat No. 9 Rollins by a score of 5-4 last week.
The No. 1 doubles duo of
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) started the match off with an 8-2 victory while Louise Von Agris and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) followed with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) finished up doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 2.
Moving into singles play, Petercakova put the Crimson Hawks on top 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No.3 spot over Lara Scholtze. Chestnut Hill bounced back with three straight singles victories, with Timko falling 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1; McCormick losing to Iman Williams-Mulesa 6-1, 6-4; and Gonzalez getting outlasted in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 10-7.
IUP bounced back, getting the clinching win from Von Agris at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1 over Axe Owens. Butland then finished things off with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Morgan Oechsle at No. 5.
This match is the first of six over the next seven days, including one of three against a ranked opponent, as the Crimson Hawks embark on their annual spring trip to South Carolina. IUP faces No. 36 Tusculum on Monday and will battle No. 32 Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday. Also included on the trip are matches against Chowan, Dickinson and Michigan Tech.
