CLERMONT, Fla. – The IUP softball team won its first game of the year, a 5-3 victory over Hillsdale, as they split their two Sunday evening contests at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
As the time of publication on Monday morning, the box score from the Crimson Hawks' win over Hillsdale was unavailable.
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) started and picked up the win in the circle for IUP.
IUP's first game of the day was a 3-1 loss to Wilmington. The Wildcats got all the runs they needed in the first inning, getting three hits while two IUP errors helped Wilmington bring three runs across the plate.
The Crimson Hawks went hitless until the fourth when
Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) led things off with an infield single.
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) followed with a single through the right side and two batters later IUP capitalized on a Wilmington failed pickoff attempt, which brought Mercer around from second base to make it a 3-1 ball game.
The Crimson Hawks would put runners on in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but stranded a total of five as the score remained the same and Wilmington came away with the victory.
IUP starter
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) allowed just three hits after that first inning, shutting down the Wildcats the rest of the way. She went six innings in the start, striking out two and allowing six hits and just one earned run.
The Crimson Hawks' six hits came from three players, as Mercer, Gould and
Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) each had two hits apiece.
IUP, now 1-5 over the last three days in Florida, are off on Monday and return to the diamond on Tuesday to play Northwood and Tiffin.
