Women’s Lacrosse Gets 10-goal Victory over Kutztown

INDIANA, Pa. – Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) scored a season-high five goals and Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) had 10 draw controls in the IUP women's lacrosse team's 17-7 victory over visiting Kutztown at George P. Miller Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the Crimson Hawks' sixth in a row as they ran their record to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). They remain in second place in the league, one game behind Lock Haven (7-0).

IUP opened with the game's first 10 goals, including all five of Palardy's scores in the first 24:58. The other five goals were scored by Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), Sarah Harshman, Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley), Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) and Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) as the Crimson Hawks totaled 21 shots in the first half alone.

The IUP defense played a strong first half, forcing the Golden Bears (1-11, 0-8) into 13 turnovers while limiting them to just three shots.

Kutztown did tack on a pair of goals in the last three minutes of the half as IUP went into the break with a 10-2 lead.

The Crimson Hawks went on a run to begin the second half, scoring the first four goals to jump on top of Kutztown by a score of 14-2. Smith scored the first two goals of the half, just 1:39 apart, while Harshman and McLeish each added a score.

Kutztown came back with three straight goals to cut its deficit to 14-5 with 10:41 to play, but the Crimson Hawks put the game on ice with back-to-back goals by Smith and Emma Hicks (Reedsville, WV/Morgantown), going back on top by double-figures and forcing the clock to run en route to the 10-goal victory.

Palardy also assisted on a goal and added two draw controls, a ground ball and caused a turnover. Smith finished with four goals and had two ground balls and two draw controls. Weinberg scored two goals and assisted on four others in addition to her 10 draw controls.

Defensively, Maddie Poehlman (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough (Howard C.C.)) caused three turnovers while Hannah Bertolo (Murrysville/Franklin Regional) caused a pair. Bertolo and Hooven each picked up five ground balls. Three goalies saw time in the net, including Angela Lontoc (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) who got the start and played over 26 minutes.

The Crimson Hawks will take their six-game win streak to Erie on Tuesday to face Mercyhurst, which entered Saturday tied with IUP and Bloomsburg for second in the PSAC with a 5-1 league record.
