INDIANA, Pa. – The 32nd-ranked IUP women's tennis team picked up their 12th victory of the season – including fifth regional win – after defeating West Virginia State by a score of 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
The Crimson Hawks are ranked second in the Atlantic Region and now own a 5-1 record against top 10 regionally ranked opponents. West Virginia State is ranked third.
IUP took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, starting with an 8-4 victory by
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) at one.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) followed with an 8-5 victory at three and
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) paired for a 9-8 (3) victory at two.
Petercakova opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brooke Campbell at the second spot. Von Agris then defeated Brenda Cumpa 6-0, 6-1 at five and Butland took down Nina Dillwald 6-2, 6-3 at four.
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) made it 7-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Charlotte Sandy at three before West Virginia State got on the board when Diana Cotoror defeated Wood 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 at six.
Timko then finished things off by rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 victory over Brittany Franco at one.
Today's match was the second of three straight for IUP, which will play a total of six matches over the course of just nine days to end the regular season. The Crimson Hawks are currently 12-6 overall and will host Tiffin (Ohio) tomorrow afternoon.
