MONROEVILLE, Pa. – In a match moved indoors due to rain, the 32nd-ranked IUP women's tennis team shut out conference opponent Edinboro 9-0 at the Monroeville Club for Life on Thursday evening.
Seniors
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) combined to go 3-0 in the match, with Timko picking up wins at first doubles and singles and McCormick winning at the sixth singles spot.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 14-6 overall with the win. They also wrapped up their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule with a 5-1 record, earning the second seed in the Western Division. They will host the third seed in the quarterfinals of the PSAC championships next Tuesday. Edinboro falls to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in the PSAC.
Timko's first win came with
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) as they defeated Katie Allan and Oranza Carrillo 8-2.
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) teamed for an 8-1 victory over Marija Tmusic and RyAnne' Baldwin at two and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) beat Julia Hellstern and Lydia Browne 8-3 at three.
In singles play, it was Timko who finished first, defeating Hellstern 6-0, 6-1. Butland followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Baldwin and Petercakova defeated regionally-ranked Carrillo 6-2, 6-2 at two.
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) had her team-leading 23rd win of the year at three, rallying to defeat Tmusic 2-6, 6-3, 10-5. McCormick blanked Nevena Kulina 6-0, 6-0 and Von Agris finished things up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Allan at five.
The Crimson Hawks are in action this weekend when they host Bucknell on Saturday before wrapping up their regular season on Sunday at West Liberty.
