INDIANA, Pa. – The 32nd-ranked IUP women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a convincing 8-1 home win over Division I Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 15-6 with the victory, their fourth straight.
They got out to an early 3-0 lead by scoring wins in all three doubles matches, including an easy 8-1 victory at the top spot by
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium).
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) tallied a 9-7 victory at two while
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) scored an 8-6 win at the third spot.
Timko continued the Crimson Hawks' winning ways with a 6-3, 6-1 victory number one singles victory.
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at the third spot while Butland won 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (5) at four.
Von Agris had another three-set win for the Crimson Hawks, getting a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 victory at five while Wood won 7-6 (3), 6-4 at six. Petercakova fell in her match at two by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
IUP originally was scheduled to travel to West Liberty on Sunday for its regular season finale, but that match was cancelled, which means today marks the end of the Crimson Hawks' regular season.
They'll head into the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships as the number two seed in the Western Division with a 5-1 league record. IUP will host Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals next Tuesday and with a win, would head to Bloomsburg for the semifinals on Friday.
