INDIANA, Pa. –
Ryan Uhl (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys) broke IUP single season records in runs batted in and total bases as the Crimson Hawks split a non-divisional doubleheader with Bloomsburg on Tuesday afternoon at Dougherty Field.
The senior first baseman went 4-for-7 with four home runs and 10 runs batted in during the twin bill, bringing his season totals to 68 RBI and 139 total bases. Those totals broke the old records of 62 RBI and 134 total bases, held by Kyle Stryker and Paul Bingham, respectively, in 2010.
Also extending his IUP single season home run record to 26 during the day, Uhl is also on pace to break the school mark for slugging percentage as his 1.069 is ahead of Kevin McMullan's .789.
The Crimson Hawks lost the opener 19-7 before bouncing back with a 12-5 game two win, moving over .500 with a 20-19-1 overall record.
Uhl hit two homers in each game, with his first coming in the opening inning. It was a two-run shot that brought home
Austin Mock (State College, Pa./State College) and followed a leadoff solo homer by
Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown). Uhl's second blast came in the seventh inning, another two-run home run that also brought home Mock.
Mock had his own home run, lifting a solo shot over the fence it right center in the second inning. It was his 12th of the season.
Bloomsburg (13-19) scored early and often, putting seven on the board in the first inning. The Huskies went on to score four runs over the next three innings before exploding for eight in the fifth inning. Four different pitchers saw time for the Crimson Hawks, with
Sam Riley (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) taking the loss in the start.
IUP starter
Michael Klingensmith (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) turned things around in game two, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six batters in six innings. It was the freshman's first career victory.
Uhl's homers came in the first and sixth innings, with the latter being a grand slam that gave the Crimson Hawks a 10-2 lead.
Zac LaNeve (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) also homered for IUP, as his was a two-run shot in the fourth inning that broke a tie and gave the Crimson Hawks a 4-2 lead.
The doubleheader was IUP's final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover of the year. The Crimson Hawks will face Gannon in a four-game set to close the regular season this weekend with a shot at the PSAC tournament on the line.
IUP will travel to Erie on Friday and will host the Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon, which will also be Senior Day for the Crimson Hawks. First pitch for each twin bill is set for 1 p.m.
