Softball Gets Swept by Seton Hill at Home

INDIANA, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks held leads in each game of the doubleheader but gave way to both as Seton Hill swept IUP in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West softball twin bill on Tuesday afternoon at Podbielski Field.

The Crimson Hawks lost games of 13-4 and 12-6 to Seton Hill, falling to 12-18 overall and 10-10 in the PSAC West.

IUP grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first game with Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East), Meghan Carney (Corry/Corry) and Lauren Hogue (Seneca/Cranberry) all driving in runs. The Crimson Hawks took a 4-2 lead in the second on a solo homer to center by Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) and later held a 4-3 lead heading to the fourth.

Seton Hill (29-8-1, 21-6-1) took the lead in the fourth with two runs, adding three in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take a nine-run lead. The Griffins would go on to get the six inning, mercy rule victory.

Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) started for the Crimson Hawks and took the loss. IUP totaled 10 hits, with Mercer, Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) and Carney each tallying a pair of base knocks. Carney and Amanda Parrish (Dysart/Altoona) each had doubles while one of McCoy's hits was a triple to right field.

It was Seton Hill that took a 3-0 lead in the second game before the Crimson Hawks rallied, scoring one in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to go on top by a score of 6-3. Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) was responsible for IUP's first run, while McCoy, Parrish and Taylor Mercurio (Pittsburgh/Seton-La Salle) brought home runs in the third inning. Viguers then smashed a two-run homer to right center in the fourth inning to extend the Crimson Hawks' lead.

The Griffins responded with seven runs in the fifth inning to jump on top 10-6 and later added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Emily Hofmann (Dublin/Pennridge) got the loss in the second game, going all seven innings in the circle. Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) had two hits and McCoy and Hogue each scored two runs.
