EDINBORO, Pa. – The IUP softball team dropped both ends of a key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubleheader to Edinboro on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks lost by scores of 4-2 and 6-3 as they fell to 14-20 overall and 12-12 in the PSAC West, falling one win behind Edinboro in the standings. The Fighting Scots moved into fourth place in the division with a 13-8-1 PSAC West record.
In game one, Edinboro received all the run support it needed with three runs on five hits in the second inning. The Crimson Hawks came right back in the third, scoring a pair on a two-run home run to right center off the bat of
Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson).
The Fighting Scots answered in the bottom half with an RBI double, taking the 4-2 lead over IUP.
Three times the Crimson Hawks were able to put runners on the rest of the way, but each one was left stranded as IUP couldn't get another run across the plate.
The Crimson Hawks had four hits in the game, with two coming off the bat of
Bryanna Lonick (Burgettstown/Burgettstown).
Alexa Campbell (Manheim/Manheim Central ) took the loss, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in six innings.
Game two saw IUP take an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer by
Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East).
Stefanie McCoy (New Paris/Chestnut Ridge) brought the Crimson Hawks' first run in as
Megan Gould (New Germany/Forest Hills) crossed home plate on a single to center.
IUP starter
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) hadn't given up a hit through three innings until the Fighting Scots came through with three runs on four hits in the fourth inning alone to tie the game at 3-3. Edinboro scored one run in the fifth and stretched its lead to three with two more runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning before keeping IUP off the base paths in the seventh to secure the sweep.
The Crimson Hawks finished with eight hits in game two, with two each from Gould, Viguers and
Taylor Mercurio (Pittsburgh/Seton-La Salle). Spindler had the loss in the circle, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
It was the second of five doubleheaders in consecutive days for the Crimson Hawks, who will host Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon.
